Aluminum, on the other hand, does not exhibit a clearly defined fatigue limit. Instead, the fatigue strength decreases continuously with increasing cycles. Failure will eventually occur with enough repetitive stress, regardless of how low the stress is.

From both a production and operational standpoint, steel offers significant budget advantages. Raw steel is typically more affordable than aluminum, and fabrication processes such as welding and machining are more straightforward and less expensive. While aluminum may reduce weight, the higher upfront costs and repair expenses often outweigh those savings.

4. Structural Stiffness and Safety

Steel’s Young’s modulus ranges between 190 and 210 GPa, which is 2.5 to 3 times stiffer than aluminum’s 68 to 79 GPa. For transport companies, this indicates that steel chassis can deflect less than their aluminum counterpart under the same load because of their higher stiffness. It helps maintain integrity and stability, especially under heavier container loads common in intermodal transport.
